eMortality: Now you can live forever, sorta
I wrote an article that was accepted in CTheory almost 23 years ago based on an idea I had that I just could not-not write about. Bear in mind, as an academic, there were limited, peer-reviewed places I could submit what I was thinking about. So, tip-o-the-hat to the editorial board members and peer reviewers (that include such notables as Bruce Sterling, Eugene Thacker, Andrew Ross, Frances Dyson, and of course, founding editors in chief, Arthur and Marilouise Kroker) that accepted it.
In a recent podcast with Jamie Metzl, JD, PhD, we were discussing all things techie and AI and possible future scenarios, and it reminded me of that article. Then I read Simone Stolzoff’s recent piece in Quartz “Could AI allow you to live forever?” and soon thereafter Courtney Humphries’ “Digital immortality: How your life’s data means a version of you could live forever” in MIT Technology Review, and zowie, Déjà vu!
I learned that MIT’s Media Lab is working on augmented eternity and swappable identities. Go figure.
